Success is not a day’s job. If you must climb the ladder of success, you have to be very strong willed, prepared and focused. We have heard of several men in this country of ours who made great name for themselves. These great men and women did not make name for themselves by playing. This leads me to talking about a great man who has achieved a whole lot. He is the professor of Political Economy and Management Expert (PEME).
Patrick Okedinachi Utomi, an indigene of Igbuzo in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State popularly known as Pat Utomi is a man whose character can be emulated.
He was born in Kaduna, Kaduna State on February 6, 1956. For his primary education, he attended St. Thomas, kano from 1960-1962 and Our Lady of Fatima, Gusau from 1962-1966 after which he proceeded to Christ the King college, Onitsha and Loyola college, Ibadan respectively. He was 15 years of age at the time he graduated from secondary school but craved for more knowledge as the entry age into university at that time was 17 years. He enrolled in Federal school of Arts and Science while waiting to clock 17 years.
In 1973, he got admitted into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he studied Mass Communication and graduated in 1977. He went further and attended Indiana university, Bloomington, Indiana, U.S.A where he got his Ph.D, MPA and MA. Not long after he returned to Nigeria from Indiana, he was appointed special assistant by former president Shehu Shagari. He lost the position following the military coup of December 1983, which brought the second republic to an end.
Thereafter, he became chairman, chief executive officer- Utom App holding Ltd from 1984-1986. He was also the assistant Gen. Manager corporate affairs- Volkswagen of Nigeria Ltd between 1983-1993. He went further and coordinated the establishment of several civil society groups on good governance and accountability.
In business, he was the vice-chairman- Platinum Habib bank, a columnist and chairman business day media Ltd, creator of Patutos gang, a talk show on television, and a professor of Lagos Business school which over a period of time changed into Pan-Africa University, Lagos. In 1996, he was cower in residence, American University, Washington D.C, U.S.A and also research associate, The Harvard Business School, Boston, Massachusetts.
He belongs to many professional bodies such as- Nigerian Institute of Public Relations where he was a member, Institute of Directors, Nigeria Economic Summit Group, Nigeria Economic Society etc. This man of noble birth has served in the key Apex private sector association, including the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), The National Council of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria. He became chairman POISE Nigeria Ltd and The Nigeria Employers consultative Association (NECA).
Pat Utomi is a fellow of The Institute of Management Consultants of Nigeria, he has won numerous awards and honors to his credit some of which are- Who is who in Africa, who is who in Nigeria, Loyola Old boys Association National Merit Award winner, 1998, distinguished Alumnus award and Alumni Ambassador by the senate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Vanguard newspaper nominated entrepreneur of the year, 1999 and many others. Books and selected publications to his credit includes- Values and economic stagnation in Africa, a paradox of poverty in Nigeria, performance under constraint, the Nigerian press under military rule, managing uncertainty, competition and strategy in emerging economies, critical perspectives in political economy and management and many more.
He has been guest speaker at the annual business club meetings of African business club at the Harvard business school, Wharton Kellogg School and the Ted Euston, University of London.
Putting all of his achievements together, we can say he is indeed a great man who craved for success, had passion for hard work and who was determined.
