In 2011, when I wanted to start my first organisation,www.brownbuttonfoundation.org. I was confused, scared of taking risks and afraid of failing.
To mitigate any potential loss, I went to the house of a close friend of mine and told her about my plans to start the organisation and what I wanted to do. I also told her I wanted us to work together on it.
She said NO.
I was deflated and lost every zeal to go on with it. I paused the idea for a while but after a few months I was back at it, determined to succeed and make an impact in my community. Today, the rest is history.
As we march into 2017, here are a few lessons you should take to heart from my story:
- Your vision is YOUR vision! Not everyone sees or understand it and that is perfectly fine too. You are the one with the idea. It’s high time you stop making excuses and letting others determine your life’s progression. Be bold, take that risk, start something today!
- NO never kills! In 2017, understand that NO is part of your life journey, it’s part of what grows you and gives your story all the beauties it will have. No one climbs a smooth and levelled mountain and no levelled ground will have a peak. Understand this.
- Discouragements should never stop you!
From starting Brown Button Foundation to kickstarting Mothers Delivery Kit and even my latest ventures, to say I haven’t been discouraged will be a big lie. When I started Mothers Delivery Kit, I was told no one will buy the kits and it was a useless venture. Today, 400,000 kits sales have proved them wrong! Whatever you do in 2017, keep pushing!
- Continually seek capacity building opportunities.
Because the world is continually evolving, you cannot afford to be stagnant. Seeking capacity building skills will also help to expand your coast and think more broadly about the work that you do. Be very strategic in accessing opportunities this new year.
- Never wait for funding!
It’s great to have big plans, but it’s even greater to be realistic about your capacity and resource. Start small, dream big and keep growing!
Whatever you do in 2017, resolve to make it a year you will quit talking or wishing and start implementing!
Have an awesome last day in 2016.
See you next year 🙂
